Millions of Mexicans suffer from an extreme heat wave – the third this year. Since mid-April, Eight people have died across the country because of the high temperatures.
With temperatures reaching 35 degrees in the centre of Mexico City, a metropolis of millions, the air in the capital is more than stuffy because of the exhaust fumes. In Monterrey in the northeast, temperatures are over 40 degrees Celsius. There, the water pressure in the pipes is decreasing, and due to the high electricity consumption caused by air-conditioning systems, there are repeated power cuts.
Meanwhile, in the state of Nuevo León, children have been ordered to attend school for only two hours a day to reduce their exposure to the heat.
Prolonged heat waves due to climate change
Mexico, with its 126 million inhabitants, experiences heat waves every year. However, experts attribute the heat wave now lasting so long to artificial climate change.
